What’s special about rope furniture, and how does it compare to wicker?

Rope outdoor furniture uses strong synthetic cords woven around a frame to form seats and backs. It has a contemporary, open look with a little softness and flex. Wicker has a more traditional, textured weave and feels slightly firmer. At Poynters, both rope and synthetic wicker are durable, weather-resistant options. Many customers mix rope chairs with wicker tables for a layered, designer-style outdoor setting.

Are the rope and wicker materials used really okay in rain and sun?

Yes. Poynters’ rope and wicker seating uses UV-stabilised synthetic fibres specifically made for outdoor use. They don’t absorb water, so they won’t rot, swell or mildew, and are colourfast under strong New Zealand sun. After rain, the open weave lets water drain and dry quickly. A quick wipe or letting pieces air-dry is usually all that’s needed before you sit down again.

Do rope chairs and sofas support weight well?

Absolutely. The rope used in Poynters’ outdoor furniture is typically a high-tensile synthetic cord woven tightly around a sturdy metal frame. The frame carries the main structural load, while the rope distributes weight evenly and provides comfortable give. Our rope chairs and sofas are designed for normal adult use and then some, so you can sit back, lounge or curl up with confidence.

What kind of maintenance do rope and woven chairs need?

Maintenance for rope and synthetic wicker seating is minimal. Brush off dust or leaves and occasionally wash with mild soapy water, then rinse gently. There’s no need for oiling or sealing, and the materials are not vulnerable to insects or rot. For spills or bird droppings, a soft brush and soapy water usually do the trick. Covers in winter can help reduce cleaning but aren’t essential.

Are cushions necessary with rope and wicker seating?

Both rope and wicker seating are comfortable on their own, with a natural bit of flex and airflow. However, cushions do add extra softness and are popular for longer lounging. Many Poynters rope and wicker pieces come with tailored outdoor cushions that are quick-drying and mould-resistant. Cushions also let you introduce colour and pattern, while the woven surfaces underneath still provide supportive structure.

Do rope and wicker furniture pieces from Poynters work well together if I mix them?

Yes. Poynters curates rope and wicker ranges so they coordinate easily. You’ll often see similar frame finishes and complementary rope and wicker colours, such as charcoals, greys and naturals. Mixing a rope lounge chair with a wicker coffee table creates textural contrast without clashing. Combining both materials is an effective way to add depth and interest while keeping a cohesive, relaxed outdoor look.
