What types of outdoor umbrellas does Poynters offer?

Poynters offers several styles of outdoor umbrellas, including classic centre-pole market umbrellas, cantilever (side-post) umbrellas that float the canopy over your space, and wall-mounted umbrellas for compact areas. Shapes range from round to square in sizes from around 2–2.5 m up to 4 m+. Many models include tilt or rotation functions and wind-resistant ribs for extra resilience.

Are the umbrella fabrics fade-resistant and water-repellent?

Yes. Our outdoor umbrellas use premium canopy fabrics such as solution-dyed acrylics and Olefin that are UV-stable and fade-resistant in strong New Zealand sun. They’re treated to be water-repellent, so light showers usually bead and run off. Heavier rain may eventually penetrate a little, as the primary purpose is sun protection, but the canopies are designed to dry quickly and resist mildew.

Do I need an umbrella base, and what kind should I choose?

Unless your umbrella is securely held through the centre of a heavy table, you’ll need a suitable base. Poynters supplies a range of concrete, metal and fillable bases in different weights. As a guide, larger canopies require heavier bases. Cantilever umbrellas often use cross-bases that take pavers or dedicated weight packs. We can help match the correct base weight and pole size to your umbrella.

Are Poynters’ outdoor umbrellas easy to open, close and tilt?

Yes. Most Poynters umbrellas are designed for simple, one-person operation. Many feature crank lift systems for easy opening and closing, while others use a rope and pulley. Tilt functions may be push-button or built into the crank, and cantilever models often rotate and lock into several positions. Clear instructions are supplied, and we recommend not forcing mechanisms if anything feels jammed.

What should I do with my outdoor umbrella in high winds or over winter?

In strong winds, always close your umbrella and secure it with the supplied strap so the canopy can’t catch the wind. For cantilever styles, lock them closed and use any protective cover provided. Over winter or long periods of non-use, it’s best to store umbrellas dry in a shed or use a fitted cover outdoors.

Do outdoor umbrellas from Poynters provide UV protection and help keep the area cooler?

Yes. Our umbrella canopies are made from fabrics with high UV protection ratings, so they significantly reduce direct UV exposure. By creating shade, they also lower the felt temperature compared with sitting in full sun. Vented or breathable canopies help hot air escape, reducing stuffiness under the umbrella. Choosing lighter colours can further reflect heat while still giving excellent shade.
